What changed?
- 19 August 2026: the UAE Government announced that it was halting all trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran until further notice (UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
- Earlier in 2026: direct cargo shipping between the UAE and Iran had been suspended in early March and resumed through Jebel Ali in late June, according to Al Jazeera.
- Other sanctions regimes: US sanctions on Iran were also expanded during 2026, including a determination of 24 August covering Iran's shipping sector; see the OFAC Iran sanctions page.
At our review on 1 November 2026 we had no official notice that the UAE decision had been lifted.
What does it mean for your cargo?
- Services suspended: Nil Ocean Shipping does not handle shipments to, from or through Iran while the suspension applies. The China–Iran, UAE–Iran and Iran inland lanes are shown as suspended on our lane status board, and no requests are accepted for them.
- Screening: we screen parties, goods, origin, routing and vessels, may ask for end-use and ownership information, and decline any request that falls under the suspension; see our compliance and sanctions policy and restricted goods pages.
- Your own obligations: trade and payment restrictions also bind banks, carriers and insurers, and other countries’ sanctions may apply to your transaction. Take advice from your own legal adviser for your situation.
- Updates: we review this position with our legal advisers and will update this advisory, with the date of the change, if the position changes.
