In practice: terms such as CY/CY on a booking show where the carrier's responsibility starts and ends. FCL boxes are gated into the CY before the CY cut-off. LCL cargo must reach the origin CFS before its own, earlier cut-off, and at destination it is collected from the CFS after the container has been unpacked, which adds handling charges and usually a day or more.
Example: an LCL shipment for a Dubai buyer is discharged at Jebel Ali in its shared container, moved to a CFS for deconsolidation, and released to the consignee's truck against the delivery order once customs has cleared it.

A container yard (CY) is the terminal area where full containers are received, stored and delivered; a container freight station (CFS) is the warehouse where LCL cargo is packed into, or unpacked from, shared containers.
