Shipping from China to Dubai in 2026: Routes, Transit, Costs | Nil Ocean Shipping
This guide is for importers in the UAE and for traders who buy in China and sell on from Dubai. It explains how cargo moves today, how long it takes, what drives the cost and which documents you need. Every time and cost range below is indicative, was reviewed on 1 November 2026 and must be confirmed for your own booking.
Which ports does cargo from China to Dubai use?
Most cargo loads at one of China's large container ports and is booked to Jebel Ali, Dubai's main container port, although in 2026 many services discharge first at a port on the UAE east coast or in Oman.
Origin region
Main ports (UN/LOCODE)
Typical supplier areas
East China
Shanghai (CNSHA), Ningbo-Zhoushan (CNNGB)
Shanghai, Zhejiang (including Yiwu), Jiangsu
South China
Shenzhen and Yantian (CNSZX, CNYTN), Guangzhou and Nansha (CNCAN, CNNSA), Xiamen (CNXMN)
On the UAE side the usual destination is Jebel Ali (AEJEA). Cargo for Abu Dhabi may use Khalifa Port (AEKHL), and Sharjah has its own port (AESHJ). Since March 2026 the east-coast ports of Khor Fakkan (AEKLF) and Fujairah (AEFJR), and Sohar (OMSOH) in Oman, have become the main discharge points for many Dubai-bound containers.
How has the 2026 Hormuz disruption changed the route?
Since around 1 March 2026 the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed to mainline container ships, so many Dubai-bound containers are discharged outside the Strait and moved to Jebel Ali by bonded truck.
Dubai Customs Notice 03/2026 (8 March 2026) allows containers discharged at Khor Fakkan or Fujairah to travel to Jebel Ali under customs bond, while the bill of lading keeps Jebel Ali as the final destination (summary by Al Tamimi & Co). Bonded trucking from Sohar to Jebel Ali has also been used since April 2026.
Extra cost lines appeared: war-risk and emergency surcharges, reported at about US$2,000–4,000 per TEU in March 2026 (Xeneta), plus charges for the road leg to Jebel Ali. Freightos reported Shanghai–Jebel Ali rates rising from under US$2,000 to over US$8,000 per 40ft container at the peak.
Less predictable timing: vessels can wait at anchor before berthing at the east-coast ports, and truck capacity to Jebel Ali varies from week to week.
Plan for several weeks door to door: the sea leg from the main Chinese ports has typically been in the range of about 18–30 days, and 2026 routing can add days for anchorage waits and the bonded truck leg.

What drives the cost of shipping from China to Dubai?
The base ocean freight is only part of the bill; surcharges, destination charges, duties and time-related charges usually decide the landed cost.

Ocean freight and bunker surcharge
Buyer under FOB; seller under CFR or CIF
Rate validity date and the service (direct or transshipment)
War-risk, emergency or contingency surcharges
Whoever pays the freight

Usually the buyer under FOB, CFR and CIF
Ask for these in writing before booking

Storage, demurrage and detention
Whoever causes the delay

Product-specific approvals before loading
The Incoterm on your purchase decides who pays each line. If the terms are unclear, read our guides to Incoterms 2020 and DDP vs DAP.
Which documents do you need to import into Dubai?
You need a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and usually a certificate of origin, plus any permit your product requires, and the importer must hold a valid UAE trade licence and a Dubai Customs client code.
Commercial invoice: seller and buyer details, a clear description of each item, HS code, quantity, unit and total value, currency, Incoterm and country of origin. Check whether your invoice must be attested under the UAE rules in force when you ship.
Packing list: number of packages, gross and net weights and dimensions, matching the invoice line by line.
Bill of lading: original, telex release or sea waybill, as agreed with the seller.
Certificate of origin: normally issued by a chamber of commerce or another authorised body in China.
Permits for controlled goods: food, cosmetics, medicines, chemicals, telecom equipment and some other goods need approval from the competent UAE authority, ideally before the goods are loaded.
Duty and VAT are paid through Dubai Customs. Import VAT is administered by the Federal Tax Authority; VAT-registered importers can generally recover it under the normal rules.
Should you ship FCL or LCL from China to Dubai?
Choose FCL when your cargo fills most of a container or needs a sealed box, and LCL for smaller volumes, accepting extra handling time and destination LCL charges. Our FCL vs LCL guide shows how to find the break-even point, and the container sizes guide shows how much fits in each box.
How do you avoid surprise costs on the China–Dubai route?
Ask for an itemised quote that names the Incoterm, lists what is included and excluded, and puts free days and surcharge validity in writing.
Compare quotes with the same scope: port to port, port to door or door to door.
Ask for each surcharge separately, with its validity date.
Ask whether the bonded truck to Jebel Ali is included.
Get the free days at destination in writing, not only on a call.
Confirm who pays duty and VAT, and in whose name the goods will be declared.
Send draft documents to your forwarder before the cargo leaves China, so mismatches are fixed early.
At Nil Ocean every case has a cost sheet: each line is marked as included, estimated or pass-through at cost, and any new or changed charge needs your approval before it is invoiced.
Frequently asked questions
How long does sea freight from China to Dubai take in 2026?
Indicatively, the sea leg from the main Chinese ports has typically taken about 18–30 days, and 2026 routing through east-coast ports plus bonded trucking can add several days. Times vary by carrier, port and season, so confirm the schedule for your booking.
Is Jebel Ali still the destination if my container is discharged at Khor Fakkan?
Often yes. Under Dubai Customs Notice 03/2026 the bill of lading can keep Jebel Ali as the final destination while the container is moved there by bonded truck. Ask who arranges that leg and whether it is in your quote.
What import duty does the UAE charge on goods from China?
Most goods pay UAE customs duty of 5% of the CIF value, plus 5% import VAT. Some goods are exempt or charged at other rates, so check your HS code with Dubai Customs or your clearance agent.
Do I need a licence to import goods into Dubai?
Yes. The importer of record needs a UAE trade licence that covers the goods and a Dubai Customs client code. If you do not have one, agree before shipping how the goods will be cleared and in whose name.
Can you give me a fixed all-in price from China to Dubai?
We can quote all-in for a clearly listed scope. Anything outside that list, such as storage, inspection or demurrage caused by delays, is shown as a possible charge and needs your approval before it is invoiced.

Cargo from China reaches Iraq by sea to Umm Qasr, by sea to Jebel Ali and then feeder, RoRo or truck, or by sea to Türkiye and overland to the north. This guide compares the three routes, how the 2026 Hormuz disruption changed them, what drives cost and how to choose.
Shipping from China to Dubai: routes, transit times and cost drivers
Most cargo from China to Dubai travels by sea, in a full (FCL) or shared (LCL) container, from ports such as Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen or Qingdao. Since March 2026, with the Strait of Hormuz largely closed to mainline ships, many services discharge at Khor Fakkan, Fujairah or Sohar and finish by bonded truck to Jebel Ali. Plan for several weeks door to door and budget for surcharges, UAE duty (generally 5%) and 5% VAT.
Guide
From Dubai you can reach Iraq in three main ways: a container feeder from Jebel Ali to Umm Qasr, a RoRo service for vehicles, machinery and trailers, or overland trucking through Saudi Arabia. Sea routes are usually the simpler choice for containers into southern and central Iraq; trucks suit specific door-to-door cases. In 2026 the bigger risk is Iraqi clearance: ASYCUDA, e-verified documents and the COC.

Dubai works as a buying, consolidation and re-export hub for East Africa: goods from China or the UAE market can be held in Jebel Ali Free Zone without paying UAE duty, combined into FCL or LCL loads and shipped to Mombasa (Kenya and the Northern Corridor), Dar es Salaam (Tanzania and inland) or Djibouti (Ethiopia). Plan for destination conformity certificates, African customs systems and, in 2026, east-coast UAE routing.
