China to Iraq shipping: Umm Qasr, Jebel Ali or overland? | Nil Ocean Shipping
There are three practical ways to ship from China to Iraq: by sea to Umm Qasr; by sea to Jebel Ali in Dubai and then on to Iraq by feeder, RoRo or truck; or by sea to a Turkish port and then overland to northern Iraq. Umm Qasr suits full containers for southern and central Iraq, the UAE route suits mixed, LCL and re-export cargo, and the overland route often suits the Kurdistan Region.
Routes and ranges as of our last review on 1 November 2026. Sailings to ports inside the Strait of Hormuz have been heavily disrupted since March 2026: check our and ask for a dated quote.
What are the main ways to ship from China to Iraq?
You can go by sea to Umm Qasr, through the UAE, or through Türkiye, and each route fits a different kind of shipment.
Route
How it works
Typical transit (indicative)
Best for
Watch out for
Sea to Umm Qasr
Chinese port to Umm Qasr North or South, usually with at least one transshipment
Roughly 25–40 days port to port in published forwarder ranges; longer during the 2026 disruption
Full containers for Basra, Baghdad and central or southern Iraq
Hormuz disruption, booking suspensions, port and clearance queues
Through the UAE
China to Jebel Ali (or a UAE east-coast port), then feeder or RoRo to Umm Qasr, or truck
China–UAE leg plus several days to a few weeks for the onward leg, depending on connections
LCL, several suppliers, consolidation, storage and re-export from JAFZA
Extra handling and charges at the hub
Through Türkiye
China to a Turkish port such as Mersin, then truck via Ibrahim Khalil
Varies widely with border queues
Erbil, Duhok, Sulaymaniyah and northern Iraq
Kurdistan pre-declaration and strict standards checks
All transit figures are indicative, vary by carrier, season and connection, and must be confirmed for each booking.
When does direct shipping to Umm Qasr make sense?
Direct shipping to Umm Qasr makes sense when you have full containers for Basra or central and southern Iraq, one supplier, documents ready and a carrier with a working Umm Qasr service. Umm Qasr has North and South terminals, and carriers increasingly discharge there rather than calling at Basra, so confirm which terminal your carrier uses: clearance arrangements and inland trucking differ. Margins on free time are thin. One Iraq-focused forwarder quotes free time at Umm Qasr of about 7–10 days, while clearance takes about 4–8 days at North and 5–10 days at South; these are indicative vendor figures, so get your own free time in writing. Our guide to Iraq customs in 2026 explains the clearance side.
Why route through Jebel Ali or the UAE instead?
Routing through the UAE lets you consolidate, split, store and re-export in Dubai, and new UAE–Umm Qasr capacity makes the last leg more flexible. The onward options include regional feeders (PIL has run a Jebel Ali–Umm Qasr feeder since 2024, and Gulftainer launched a UAE–Umm Qasr feeder in July 2026), DP World's RoRo service from Jebel Ali to Umm Qasr for unaccompanied trailers (about 36 hours at sea when launched in 2023; check the current schedule) and trucking. The UAE route is useful when:
you buy from several Chinese suppliers and want one consolidated container or LCL shipment;
you need to wait for a Certificate of Conformity, an e-verified document or a payment before the goods enter Iraq: goods can wait in the Jebel Ali Free Zone without paying UAE duty;
you sell in several markets and decide the final destination late.
The trade-off is extra handling, hub charges and sometimes a second bill of lading. During the Hormuz disruption, UAE-bound cargo may itself arrive via Khor Fakkan, Fujairah or Sohar and bonded trucking; see how Dubai-bound cargo moves.
When is overland the better option?
For northern Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, a sea leg to a Turkish port and a truck through the Ibrahim Khalil crossing is often more practical than a long road haul from Basra. Prepare for the border: from 1 June 2026 ASYCUDA pre-declaration became mandatory for commercial goods at Ibrahim Khalil, and Shafaq News reported 3,550 tonnes of imports rejected or destroyed there in the first four months of 2026 for breaching standards. Overland from the UAE is also possible; DP World's 2023 comparison put a land haul at about 14 days, but road routes through neighbouring countries depend on transit rules that changed in 2026, so check them before you commit.
How has the 2026 Hormuz disruption changed the picture?
Umm Qasr sits inside the Strait of Hormuz, so since March 2026 most cargo has reached it through transshipment and regional feeders rather than mainline direct calls, and transit times and surcharges have become volatile. Some carriers suspended bookings to upper-Gulf ports, and Xeneta reported war-risk charges of USD 2,000–4,000 per TEU in March 2026. In practice, the question of direct versus via the UAE has become a question of which connection is running this week, so compare route options with quotes that share the same validity date.
What does Iraq require before your cargo arrives?
Whichever route you choose, Iraq requires a registered importer of record, an ASYCUDA declaration with matching data across all documents, electronically verified certificates of origin and commercial invoices (mandatory since 10 July 2026, per Deloitte), and a Certificate of Conformity or Certificate of Inspection for regulated goods. Duties are calculated per item by HS code under Decision 957/2025 (Iraq Business News). Start the COC early; see our Iraq COC guide.
What drives the cost of shipping from China to Iraq?
No meaningful all-in price exists without the HS codes, the destination city and the route, because seven separate cost blocks move independently.
Cost driver
Why it moves
How to control it
Ocean freight and war-risk or emergency surcharges
2026 volatility on Gulf lanes
Ask for each surcharge as a separate line with a validity date
Distance to Baghdad, Erbil or other cities, empty return
Include it in the quote from the start
How do you choose the right route?
Match the route to your shipment rather than to the cheapest headline rate.
If your shipment is…
Consider…
Full containers for Basra or Baghdad, one supplier, documents ready
Sea to Umm Qasr, direct or with one transshipment
From several suppliers, or less than a container
LCL or consolidation in China or Dubai, then feeder or truck
Waiting for a COC, a document check or payment
Storage in JAFZA, then re-export to Iraq
Going to Erbil, Duhok or Sulaymaniyah
Overland via Türkiye, compared with Umm Qasr plus truck
Urgent and small
Sea to the UAE, then RoRo or truck, quoted against the direct option
Frequently asked questions
How long does shipping from China to Iraq take?
Published forwarder ranges put China to Umm Qasr at roughly 25–40 days port to port, plus clearance and inland delivery. Since March 2026 the Hormuz disruption has made times longer and less predictable, so confirm the estimate for each booking.
Is it better to ship to Umm Qasr or to Jebel Ali?
Umm Qasr is usually simpler for full containers going to southern or central Iraq with documents ready. Jebel Ali is better when you need consolidation, storage, a later decision on destination or time to complete Iraqi documents.
Can I ship LCL from China to Iraq?
Yes. LCL cargo is usually consolidated at origin or at a hub such as Dubai and then moved to Iraq by feeder, RoRo or truck. Ask for the destination charges and the consolidation point in the quote.
Which Iraqi port handles most container imports?
Umm Qasr, with its North and South terminals near Basra, is Iraq's main container gateway. Northern Iraq is often served overland through Türkiye via the Ibrahim Khalil crossing.
Do I need a Certificate of Conformity to ship to Iraq?
You need one for regulated products, and unlisted goods may need a Certificate of Inspection instead. Check your HS codes early, because the certificate is checked at the Iraqi border.

Most cargo from China to Dubai travels by sea, in a full (FCL) or shared (LCL) container, from ports such as Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen or Qingdao. Since March 2026, with the Strait of Hormuz largely closed to mainline ships, many services discharge at Khor Fakkan, Fujairah or Sohar and finish by bonded truck to Jebel Ali. Plan for several weeks door to door and budget for surcharges, UAE duty (generally 5%) and 5% VAT.
Shipping from China to Iraq: Umm Qasr direct, Jebel Ali transshipment or overland?
Cargo from China reaches Iraq by sea to Umm Qasr, by sea to Jebel Ali and then feeder, RoRo or truck, or by sea to Türkiye and overland to the north. This guide compares the three routes, how the 2026 Hormuz disruption changed them, what drives cost and how to choose.

From Dubai you can reach Iraq in three main ways: a container feeder from Jebel Ali to Umm Qasr, a RoRo service for vehicles, machinery and trailers, or overland trucking through Saudi Arabia. Sea routes are usually the simpler choice for containers into southern and central Iraq; trucks suit specific door-to-door cases. In 2026 the bigger risk is Iraqi clearance: ASYCUDA, e-verified documents and the COC.

Dubai works as a buying, consolidation and re-export hub for East Africa: goods from China or the UAE market can be held in Jebel Ali Free Zone without paying UAE duty, combined into FCL or LCL loads and shipped to Mombasa (Kenya and the Northern Corridor), Dar es Salaam (Tanzania and inland) or Djibouti (Ethiopia). Plan for destination conformity certificates, African customs systems and, in 2026, east-coast UAE routing.
