TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) and FEU (forty-foot equivalent unit) are standard units for counting containers: a 20ft container is 1 TEU and a 40ft container is 1 FEU, or 2 TEU.
In practice: vessel capacity and port volumes are measured in TEU, and carriers often quote surcharges per TEU. A surcharge quoted per TEU is therefore charged twice on a single 40ft container. Approximate internal volumes are about 33 CBM for a 20GP, 67 CBM for a 40GP and 76 CBM for a 40HC; usable volume is lower once cartons and pallets are stowed, and weight limits often bind first for heavy goods.
Example: an emergency surcharge announced per TEU appears on a quote for one 40HC as two units. Our quotes state the unit next to every surcharge so the total is clear. Our container guide lists dimensions and payloads.
