In practice: hub ports such as Jebel Ali connect large mainline vessels with feeders that serve smaller ports, including Umm Qasr and several East African ports. Transshipment widens sailing options but adds time, and cargo can be left behind (rolled) at the hub if the connecting vessel is full. It is different from re-export: transshipped cargo stays in transit under the carrier's B/L and is not cleared into the hub country.
Example: a container moves Shanghai → Jebel Ali on a mainline vessel and Jebel Ali → Umm Qasr on a feeder. The case file records the transshipment milestone, the connecting vessel and an updated ETA for the final leg.

Transshipment is the transfer of cargo from one vessel to another at an intermediate port on the way to its final port of discharge.
